but right now make no mistake about it, the fiscal cliff doubts in getting to january 1 without some kind of even a patchwork deal is what's driving the markets right now in negative territory. >> as we know, it's not a cliff, it's really a slope or series of steps as you're falling down them should a deal not come to pass here. is the drop that we've seen so far after plan b's failure, will we see yet more of the market reacting, a slow degradation of market performance? >> that depends on essentially if, for instance, a week from monday right now we're sitting here and it's almost a certainty that we're going to go over the cliff. i would argue that we could get more back to a cliff rather than slope analogy because it comes down to how swiftly does the market react in a negative way and how swiftly is the fallout on the overall u.s. economy. for example, we're getting reports from around the country that, number one, retailers have lowered their forecast on what the christmas shopping season is going to look like. we're hearing that one of our reporters who is out at a mall today

and i think that the issue that we're dealing with right now on the fiscal cliff is a prime example of it. what i'm arguing for are maintaining tax cuts for 98% of americans. you know, i don't think anybody would consider that some liberal left wing agenda. that used to be considered a pretty mainstream republican agenda. and it's something that we can accomplish today if we simply allow for a vote in the senate and in the house to get it done. the fact that it's not happening is an indication of, you know, how far certain factions inside the republican party have gone where they can't even accept what used to be considered centrist mainstream positions on these issues. now i remain optimistic. you know, i'm just a general optimist, that eventually people kind of see the light. you know, winston churchill used to say that we americans, you know, we try every other option before we finally do the right thing. after everything else is exhausted, we eventually do the right thing. and i think that that's true for congress as well. and i think it's also important for americans to remember t

we will have the late on the fiscal cliff negotiations coming up in just a few minutes, but right now it's time to take a visit to the political playground. president obama may reside at the white house, but he hasn't forgotten about his home state of illinois. he is backing a bill set to be introduced in january that would legalize gay marriage in illinois. if passed that state would be the first midwestern state to approve marriage equality via a legislative vote. for now it looks like the nra and wayne lapierre have not been invited by vice president biden to talk about ways to reduce gun violence. according to the nra's president david keene there's been no contact from the white house to include them in this process. piers morgan has penned an op-ed for those who want to see him deported for his views on gun control saying although i love the country as a second home and one that has treated me incredibly well, i would as a concerned parent first seriously consider deporting myself. and actor charlie sheen is at it again, but this time he has company. on saturday sheen sent out t

a lot of investors think if we can just get over, get past the fiscal cliff, we're going to have a pretty good year in 2013. people are saying, you know, big companies are in good shape. we're just kind of waiting for this economy to pick up steam. the housing markets is now -- has now turned around. consumers have paid down debt. there are a lot of things that are sort of going the right way, except for one thing. we need washington to solve this problem. >> again, it's not going to be a big deal within the time that's gin left. what can americans expect come payday in the new year? the affect that's going to be in their paycheck for tax reasons. >> we all know if there's not -- sthe they could come up with a short-term deal that really just pushes the whole thing off. it says this deadline is -- we're going to change the deadline. they can do that. i mean, whether they're going to do that or not, nobody is quite sure, but it does sound like the door is open for congress to come back in. it may not hit on january 1st the way people think, but this whole thing could unravel, you know, and
